Erik Bischoff
Background
Erik’s interest in scientific research was sparked early on during his studies in Biomedical Sciences. He completed his training as a general practitioner at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen. There, he combined his General Practice training with research, completing a PhD track focused on self-management in COPD and COPD exacerbations. Since 2009, he has been working as an academic GP at the University Health Center Heyendael on the campus of Radboud University Medical Center. As of September 1st 2024, Erik also serves as head of the department of General Practice at Erasmus MC. His academic career is characterized by a strong connection between science and practice.
Motivation
Erik chose general practice because of the unique, long-term relationships he can build with his patients. He finds it meaningful to be part of different phases of a patient’s life – sometimes in the foreground, sometimes in the background. For Eric, the patient is the focus: he strongly believes in delivering personalized care, attuned to what each person needs at that moment in their life. He considers this personalized and tailored aspect of his work the most rewarding part of being a GP.

The importance of UNH
Eric considers UNH to be crucial for maintaining and further developing the high quality of general practice care in the Netherlands. He views the network as an essential link to inform national parties such as NHG, LHV, health insurers, and the government – and to create a shared strategy together. Erik strives for strong collaboration within the network to better address the challenges that general practice care faces, such as the growing demand for care and the shortage of GPs.
