Henk Schers
Background
Henk Schers has been a professor of General Practice at the Radboud University Medical Center since 2021. He has worked in the department of Primary Care for over twenty years, earned his PhD in 2004 on the topic of continuity of care, and has since focused primarily on research into regional network development and innovation in transmural care. Within the department, he leads the academic general practice unit and is head of the patient care unit. Additionally, he has been a practicing GP at the academic health center Thermion in Lent since 1999.
Motivation
I have always combined my clinical practice with an academic career, and within this combination I find true inspiration. I value strengthening the scientific foundation of our field and playing a guiding role in that process. General practice is essential in the Dutch healthcare landscape, and I believe it deserves a more prominent role. I’m committed to contributing to that goal.

As a professor of General Practice, he is part of UNH, connected to UNH academic general practice centers. Additionally, he serves as Chair of the NHG Association Council.
The importance of UNH
UNH represents academic general practice in the Netherlands, where today’s GPs are inspired, trained, and equipped with the knowledge necessary to deliver top patient care. In a small country like ours, many research projects and initiatives are better conducted at the national level than regionally. Effective collaboration among departments is therefore essential. UNH serves as the voice of scientific foundation and innovation in general practice within the broader national healthcare landscape. A unified, strategic academic agenda is crucial – not only to improve research and education, but also to strengthen care innovation and the scientific foundation of general practice.
