After completing her training as a general practitioner at LUMC in 2003, Hedwig entered the field of scientific research and politics. She did her PhD at Radboudumc in Nijmegen in the area of gender and prevention and also served as a city councilor in The Hague.   <\/p>\n<p>After earning her PhD in 2014, she became an LHV district board member and a supervisor at the NHG. She was also a co-founder of the regional general practitioners&#8217; organization Hadoks. In 2017, Hedwig became head of the general practitioner network ELAN at LUMC, and at the end of 2019, she took over the leadership of the general practitioner training there. As of November 8th 2024, she holds the position of head of the department of Public Health and Primary Care at LUMC. Where it used to be a natural progression after studying, the field of general practice now requires a rigorous training and lifelong learning. General practitioners are increasingly known as the medical generalists who treat truly complex patients \u2013 not because of rare diseases, but due to a combination of conditions and psychosocial problems. Contributing to the development and scientific foundation of our profession is an honorable task.
